Two-year-old goes viral for her reaction to seeing hair bonnet like hers on TV [Video]
- A 2-year-old girl from Baltimore is going viral for her reaction to seeing TV characters wear the same bonnet that she has.
- The toddler had refused to wear her bonnet for weeks.
- After watching the show “Super Bonnet”, the toddler kept her bonnet on overnight.
A 2-year-old girl’s response to seeing a TV character wearing a bonnet has gone viral.
Michaela Peacock of Baltimore says her two-year-old daughter Mila had refused to wear a bonnet at night for weeks. The bonnet was meant to protect her hair.
Peacock said that before Mila’s bedtime, she showed the toddler an episode of “Rise Up, Sing Out,” a Disney+ series of animated, musical films on race, culture, and community, that focuses on wearing bonnets to bed.
Mila kept her bonnet on overnight after seeing the TV characters do it in the episode “Super Bonnet,” according to Peacock.
Peacock posted a video of Mila watching the show in the hopes of helping other parents.
The video shows Mila pointing to the television and saying “bonnet” while she wears her own.
Talking to Good Morning America, Peacock shares:
“It really did help us, so I genuinely was like I know this is going to help other people. Especially when you’re spending two, three hours doing braids and doing your little girl’s hair, you want it to stay intact. It’s really important that they have that on at night.”
Peacock’s video went viral on social media, catching the attention of Nia Madison Thompson, who plays Taniya on “Rise Up, Sing Out.”
Mila joined Nia on Instagram last week for a “Super Bonnet” sing-a-long. That encounter, according to Nia, exemplified why “representation is important.”
On her Instagram, Nia wrote:
“If you can see it, you can be it! This is one of key reasons why I am an actor, singer and activist!”
Peacock said it was “really beautiful” to see her daughter’s reaction to seeing someone on TV that looks like her. She said it was not something she or the generations before her had as a child.
Peacock went on to say that she hopes her daughter’s video inspires artists to incorporate more representation in their work, as well as parents to choose multicultural shows and books for their children.
“It is hard … but almost every major platform has at least a handful of shows now,” said Peacock. “We’ve just got to make sure we’re utilizing them and making sure that we’re watching them so that we can get more shows and the seasons can be renewed, and that we’re actually supporting these creators.”
