Usually shy kitten sneaks into anxious dog’s crate to comfort her
- Ginger Biscuit was a shy kitten when he was rescued, but he made sure to offer comfort to a fellow rescue in need of company.
- When Anne the dog was in recovery, the kitten snuck into her crate to cuddle up to her.
- The two are now the best of friends who share a crate and eat together!
Ginger Biscuit was only 8 to 10 weeks old when he was found in a storm drain after a big rainstorm. The kitten was brought to Greenside Animal Hospital, where he was put in an isolation ward for his recovery.
The kitten was understandably nervous and shy at first, but he became “very loving” once he overcame his initial fear. “He is a bit wary of people when they enter the isolation ward until he sees us bringing food, then he is happy to creep out of his shell and interact,” said hospital owners Dr. Joubert Viljoen and Dr. Suzette Greube.
Ginger had the isolation ward all to himself — until Anne, a sray dog, was brought in.
Anne was found hiding in a bush at a nearby sports club. She was very weak, quite sick, and covered with ticks and fleas. She was brought to the hospital and into the isolation ward for recovery.
Ginger’s crate was across the room from Anne’s, so the staff thought that they wouldn’t be able to interact with each other.
But one day, they were surprised to see Ginger missing from his crate. He had snuck into Anne’s crate to snuggle with her!
The doctors said, “We underestimated the kitten’s ability to wriggle itself through the door of the cage he was placed in. With the little dog being so weak, we never considered her to be a risk to the kitten, but when we saw them together the first time around, there definitely was a moment of panic, seeing as some dogs don’t react well to cats and vice versa.”
Everyone soon saw that Anne was gentle with Ginger, and that the two seemed fond of each other.
The staff tried to move Ginger back to his crate, since his food, water, and litter box were all there. But he instantly snuck out and moved into his friend’s crate!
The pair are now happily sharing one crate.
Having Ginger’s company helped with Anne’s recovery, while the kitten felt safe in the pup’s presence.
“They love to snuggle and even have meals together,” the doctors shared. “They have toys, but the kitten’s favorite pastime is chasing Anne’s tail!”
Cats and dogs are typically depicted as enemies, but we have seen time and time again that they can be the best of friends.
