Quick Smiles:

  • Two right whales, Curlew and Koala, make a rare appearance in the Bahamas.
  • Their journey defies typical migratory patterns and has captivated scientists.
  • The sighting was a “once in a lifetime” event, leaving experts intrigued.

In a surprising twist of nature, two North Atlantic right whales, Curlew and Koala, have embarked on an extraordinary journey to the tropical waters of the Bahamas.

This unexpected adventure has left both scientists and whale enthusiasts buzzing with excitement.

The whales were first spotted by a dolphin watching tour near Bimini, about 50 miles off the coast of Florida.

The ship’s captain was astounded, initially thinking the whales were some kind of elaborate hoax.

Philip Hamilton, a senior scientist at an aquarium, shared his thoughts on the event, noting the rarity of such a sighting.

“It is fairly unusual for right whales to be seen in the Gulf of Mexico, and there are no recorded sightings of right whales in the Bahamas,” he explained.

Typically, North Atlantic right whales migrate north during this time of year.

In fact, boats in Massachusetts have been ordered to slow down due to the annual migration of these majestic creatures in areas like Martha’s Vineyard and Broad Sound.

The behavior of Curlew and Koala is even more intriguing because it is uncommon for two right whales to remain together for an extended period unless they are a mother and calf pair.

The unusual nature of their companionship has been widely noted.

With only about 370 North Atlantic right whales left in the world, the appearance of these two in such an unexpected location is both puzzling and fascinating.

Hamilton described the sighting as “remarkable and exciting.”

While vagrancies are not unheard of, especially among the eastern Atlantic whale population, the journey of Curlew and Koala into the Bahamian seas remains a captivating mystery.

“What inspired them to make this journey will likely remain a mystery,” Hamilton remarked.

These free-spirited whales have chosen a path less traveled, capturing the imagination of all who hear their story.

Their remarkable journey continues to inspire wonder and admiration.
