  • Three fishermen from Massachusetts almost drowned after their boat capsized.
  • A woman working in her home office was able to catch a glimpse of the boat before it completely disappeared into the water.
  • The woman called 911, and the three fishermen were safely rescued.

Everything was normal when a commercial fishing boat sailed into the rough seas off the coast of Massachusetts.

However, things changed for the worse when the boat began to lean too much to one side. The three fishermen aboard were thrown into the freezing water with little time to respond.

Joe Roderick, one of the fishermen, said that boats will normally lean to one side when you’re hauling back. However, their boat just kept on leaning.

“The next thing I know, the rail — which is about 5 or 6 feet from the water — was touching the water,” said Roderick.

The three men didn’t have time to call for help or even put on lifejackets, so they had to stay afloat using debris. They tried to keep each other alert while waiting to be rescued by making small talk.

Joe, who was thinking about his children, feared that he was never going to make it home. “It was ice-cold water out. It was terrifying,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pam Harght, who was on a Zoom meeting for work in a third-floor home office 30 miles south of Boston, happened to glance out one of her windows at 2:30 pm.

A boat that was seemingly drowning in the sea about a mile away caught her eye. Within seconds, the boat was no longer in sight, and all she could see was smoke.

“I just really started kind of panicking on the inside,” said Pam.

Instead of returning her attention to the meeting, she excused herself from the work call and 911.

Pam assumed that help was already on its way, but she chose to make the call just to be safe, which saved the fishermen’s lives.

Pam was the first and only one to call 911, and she did it just in time.

After nearly an hour of trying to stay afloat in the 42-degree water, the three men were finally found, rescued, and rushed to the hospital for hypothermia treatment. Each of them had also consumed a significant amount of diesel fuel that had spilled from the boat into the water.

Rescuers praised Pam’s quick thinking, emphasizing that no one knows what would have happened if she didn’t make the call at just the right time.

“All of it is just sheer luck and nothing worked in their favor, except the fact that I happen to be looking out the window,” said Pam.

The three fishermen and their families are more than grateful to Pam for saving their lives.

“If it wasn’t for her calling, nobody would have found us and nobody would have known,” said Roderick.
