‘The Notebook’ Wedding: Childhood Sweethearts Marry After 22 Years Apart
- Helen Marshall and Graeme Richardson fell in love as teens but their parents were against their young engagement.
- After drifting apart and living separate lives for 22 years, the childhood sweethearts finally reunited and got married.
- Graeme even proposed with the ring he gave her during their teenage years!
Helen Marshall and Graeme Richardson might just be the real-life version of the romantic hit, The Notebook. The childhood sweethearts drifted apart and lived separate lives for 22 years before reuniting and finally getting married.
Helen and Graeme first met in school when they were just teens.
The pair started admiring each other from across the hallways. They both had many admirers, but they couldn’t muster the courage to ask the other out.
Helen shared that she was dared by a friend to ask Graeme out, in exchange for a chocolate bar.
They quickly fell in love. They had romantic, picturesque walks, danced in school discos, and snuck into the back of the bike sheds for a quick kiss.
Marriage was in both of their thoughts, so Graeme worked during the weekends for £3 an hour.
After nine months of teenage romance, Graeme proposed with a diamond engagement ring.
But their engagement never continued. Worried they were too young, their parents had disapproved. The pair eventually drifted apart after Graeme went off to college in 1994.
Their love letters never reached each other, so they moved on with their separate lives — much like Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in the movie.
They both had their own long-term relationships and kids.
When they finally got to see each other again, it was only from afar. Their children were in the same school, and they only caught glimpses of each other.
Eventually, when they had both separated from their respective partners, Helen reached out via Facebook, and the two fell in love all over again.
Helen learned that Graeme had always longed for her since their engagement was canceled. Over 20 years later, Graeme proposed again — and with the same ring!
They finally got married last month.
Helen shared, “We just feel so content now. We’re the other half of each other. I just feel like I’m home. Like I’m whole. He’s my soul mate, and I’m his.”
Graeme agreed: “Helen’s the other half of me. She’s the opposite to me; the extrovert to my introvert. It just feels like the right ending. My friends have never known me as the happy and content man I am now.”
Congratulations, Helen and Graeme!
