When rescue animals find their forever homes, they often need time to adjust and heal from past traumas. Yet, their behavior can sometimes reveal that they sense they’re finally in a safe place. One such touching story involves a dog named Patch, whose owner believes he “knows” he’s been rescued.

A TikTok user shared her experience of rescuing Patch, who was found wandering the streets of Romania as a puppy with his brother. Despite his difficult start in life, Patch immediately connected with his rescuer.

“He immediately bonded to me and has been my shadow ever since,” she shared via TikTok.

While Patch quickly grew attached to his owner, he was initially wary of others, particularly men. It took him about six months to trust her boyfriend and dad. Thankfully, Patch eventually warmed up to her boyfriend, demonstrating once again that he “knows” he’s in a loving environment.

In a delightful TikTok video from October 3, Patch was seen cuddling with his owner’s boyfriend on the couch. The boyfriend’s arm was wrapped around Patch, gently petting him, while Patch appeared completely relaxed, basking in the safety of their presence.

Viewers were moved by Patch’s comfort, echoing the owner’s belief that “they definitely know” when animals are rescued and placed in loving homes.

“Oh stoppppp,” commented another viewer, to which the owner replied that Patch and her boyfriend are now “besties.”

An article from a dog collar company suggests that while dogs might not remember their past like humans do, they can associate experiences with emotions. They compare their current experiences with previous ones, realizing they’re now in a safer, better place.

Dogs might not grasp the specifics of their rescue, but they do understand that their life has improved. They show gratitude to their rescuers, either immediately or after some time, by warming up to them.
