Innovative work by Dawei Zhao at Shenyang University of Chemical Technology has unlocked a new use for bamboo, transforming its cellulose into a biodegradable plastic even stronger than conventional alternatives.

Traditional bamboo products are now joined by Zhao’s plastic, which holds promise for products like tools, car interiors, and appliance exteriors—areas where biodegradable options are scarce.

“Bamboo’s rapid growth makes it a highly renewable resource, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional timber sources, but its current applications are still largely limited to more traditional woven products,” Zhao shared.

The process involves breaking down bamboo cellulose with zinc chloride and acid, then combining with ethanol to produce a rigid plastic suitable for injection and molding techniques.

While the new bamboo-based plastic lacks flexibility, it addresses the persistent issue of rigid plastics that are difficult to recycle and often linger in the environment.

Cost analysis reveals this bioplastic is competitive with conventional plastic, especially due to its recyclability, and it completely breaks down in soil within 50 days.
