In the Village of Lynwood outside Chicago, 7-year-old Mia Dates showed incredible bravery when her dad Xavier fell down the stairs and hit his head in January 2025.

She stayed calm, called 911, shared vital details with the dispatcher, and welcomed paramedics into the home.

Her quick actions likely saved his life.

The village leaders praised her response, with Mayor Jada D. Curry and chiefs from the police and fire departments visiting the Dates home.

“When her dad, Xavier, suffered a serious fall at home, Mia stayed calm under pressure, called 911, provided critical information to the dispatcher, and let paramedics into the house when they arrived. Her actions made all the difference. Our Mayor Jada D. Curry, along with the Chief’s of Village of Lynwood Police Department and the Lynwood Fire Department, stopped by the Dates home to acknowledge her heroic response. She will also be formally celebrated at an upcoming Village Board meeting,”

“Mia reminds us all that courage, calmness, and compassion have no age limit. Please join us in applauding this young hero and her inspiring example for our entire community!”

On February 24, Lynwood honored Mia with a key to the city ceremony, especially meaningful on Martin Luther King Day for her bravery.

Xavier shared his pride, getting emotional about the day.

“I woke her up this morning because I was excited; I saw her on the news; I said, ‘Mia, you’re on the news.’ And she said, ‘Dad, don’t wake me up, I need to go to school.”

“If Mia wasn’t here there’s no telling how long I would’ve been on that floor. My baby helped me out.”

Stories like Mia’s inspire us to recognize everyday heroes and encourage kids to step up with courage.
