Cat gets confused when she tears up while dad chops onions [Video]

- Lola the cat curiously looked on while her owner chopped up some onions.
- She may have instantly regretted her decision when she looked away and squinted her eyes.
- She seemingly teared up and couldn’t help but squint her eyes because of the chopped onions.
Curiosity made this cat cry when she watched her owner chop up some onions.
Anyone who’s used to cooking know that chopping onions almost always ends up in tears. It turns out that cats have the same reaction!
A video captured the tearful reaction of one such cat named Lola, who was chilling in the kitchen counter while her owner chopped up some onions. She curiously watched, but may have immediately regretted her decision.
Moments later, she turns away and squints her eyes.
It’s a look that we know all too well!
But Lola seemed confused as to what’s causing her tearful reaction, since she keeps looking back at the chopped onions.
Her owner asks, “Lola are your eyes okay?”
The video, shared about a week ago, has been viewed nearly 26 million times.
Viewers found Lola’s reaction adorable and hilarious, and many could relate. Others observed that she may have wanted to be part of the cooking activity, while some joked that she was judging her owner’s knife skills.
A viewer offered a peek into what Lola might have been thinking: “No, I’m good, really, just closing my eyes because I’m so chill.” Another wondered why she wouldn’t just get off the kitchen counter. A third quipped that it’s the consequence of being nosy.
According to Britannica, “When you cut an onion, you break open cell after cell, releasing their liquidy contents.” One of the chemicals released “is volatile, meaning it easily vaporizes, and causes a burning sensation when it floats up from the cutting board and comes in contact with your eyeballs.”
“In an attempt to keep your precious eyes from being damaged, your brain quickly triggers a tear response to rinse the offending irritant away,” the explanation continued. “You are left with red eyes and tear-stained cheeks in the middle of your kitchen, the obvious victim of some (awesome) botanical warfare.”
“All members of the onion family” can cause harmful effects when ingested by cats in sufficient quantity, according to Pet MD. Small amounts shouldn’t have any adverse effects, however.
The site added, “A clove of garlic or a green onion may cause digestive upset. Eating any type of onion on a regular basis could cause anemia.”
Lola should know to keep away from onions by now!
