  • Cocker spaniel Leo has learned to perform CPR by jumping up and down on a resuscitation dummy’s chest with his paws.
  • He also learned how to check for signs of breathing by placing his nose next to the dummy’s lips.
  • His mom, Emily Anderson, taught him the skill for an international dog trick contest, which he has won six times now.

Leo the cocker spaniel may only be two years old, but he has already been mastering tricks left and right.

His mom, Emily Anderson from Aberdeen, has been teaching him a new trick every week. And Leo constantly surprises her with his quick learning.

One of Leo’s most recent tricks is not just a contest winner, but a lifesaver.

He has learned to perform CPR by jumping up and down on a resuscitation dummy’s chest with his paws when Emily says “up.” When she says “nose,” Leo checks for signs of breathing by putting his nose next to the dummy’s lips.

“I taught him to check for breath using a target stick on the mouth of the dummy until he learned where he needed to keep his nose,” Emily shared.

Emily taught Leo the skill for an international dog trick contest, which he has won six times now.

She said that Leo keeps amazing her every day, especially when he masters a seemingly impossible trick in less than 30 minutes.

Emily started training Leo when he was just eight weeks old. She noticed how Leo “is so incredibly happy when he’s training.”

Every week, she teaches him a new trick, increasing the difficulty each time.

For instance, Leo mastered the skill of stacking rings within a month. Emily started by first teaching him how to hold objects in his mouth, then teaching him how to drop them into a basket. She then upped the difficulty by making the target smaller, until he could drop rings onto a stack she was holding.

Most of the tricks use similar skills applied to different objects.

Leo is a very happy pup, who even wakes himself up from sleep with his tail wagging. His disposition temporarily changed when he had a health scare in March 2020 after contracting an infection caused by a giardia parasite.

“He wasn’t like the happy dog he was before and I knew I had to do something to help him out of his slump,” Emily shared. “I knew he’d always enjoyed his training so I decided to focus on doing a bit more of that with him and that’s how the tricks started.”

We can’t wait for the next trick Leo learns!
