  • A couple that manages a special needs rescue decided to relax and recharge from rescue work and go on a road trip vacation.
  • Just hours after embarking on the trip, they found an abandoned dog that they could not leave behind.
  • The couple decided to bring the dog along on the trip and have already named, fostered and maybe soon, adopt her.

Every once in a while, it is good to have a break to relax and recharge from managing a special needs rescue.  And so, Megan Mannarelli-Martin and her husband and their cats set off for a road trip.   But just four hours into their trip, they found a dog seemingly lost in the middle of a busy road.

Rescuers at heart and mind, they stopped and coaxed the dog to go near them. Megan said that the dog was terrified but had no problems with being rescued.

“It took an hour to gain her trust. I could not chase after her if it would cause her to become more frightened and run back into the middle of the road. So, I sat in the center road divider and let her come and go up to me for an hour before she finally got close enough that I was confident enough to snatch her up.”

They checked her for a microchip but she had none.  They checked on local online forums and informed local shelters for anyone asking about her but no one did.

And that is how the dog, now named Kevin, came to join them on their vacation.

After getting supplies for her, off they went. It may have taken her time to warm up but when she did, her sweet and excitable personality showed.  She even jumped in excitement when she saw the couple on the third night with them.

Kevin became part of the family’s exploration of Sequoia National Park and enjoyed every stop of the road trip.  Megan said, “Kevin is a super lovebug. She is so joyful and just wants to be loved and cuddled.”

The couple has already fostered Kevin and has signs of being a foster failure even if they are planning on opening her up for adoption after her last vaccination.  Hard to let go when they have grown attached to her.
