Dog saves tiny kitten from wilderness [Video]

• Chris Garrison and his dog Amaretto were out for an exercise in a forest trail.
• Amaretto promptly stopped when she heard meowing into the woods, and proceeded to follow the sound.
• Amaretto and Chris saw a tiny kitten from up the tree and saved her.

Amaretto, once a stray dog, must have known how to pay it forward. When she had the chance to save someone, she did so without any hesitation.

Recently, she and her fur dad Chris Garrison were out for a forest trail workout in Ohio. Chris was riding his bike, as Amaretto joined him running — until the pup abruptly stopped, sensing something into the woods.

“She started paying a lot of attention to the woods to our left,” Chris told The Dodo. “I got off the bike and heard the meowing.”

As soon as Amaretto realized that Chris heard the sound, too, she ran into the woods and followed the meowing sound. Chris was trailing behind.

“Amaretto led me to the kitten, who had climbed about 8 feet up into a tree,” the fur dad said.

Chris had no idea how the kitten, so tiny and lean, had gotten up there. The area was so secluded and barely visited. The thought that she might have been dumped there broke Chris’ heart, so he took the kitten in a jiff.

“I cradled [the kitten] in my arm. She immediately started purring, which was my first clue that she’d had plenty of human contact before,” Chris said. “I also didn’t see or hear any other cats around, which lead me to believe that she was abandoned out there.”

Chris was happy that his dog had found the little kitty, despite it looked impossible for anyone to notice her in that spot. Probably feeling that she had done the right thing, Amaretto was gazing upon the little creature as they traveled back home.

Chris took the cat, now named Fuji, to the Licking County Humane Society which discovered that she wasn’t microchipped. The staff welcomed the kitten and prepared her for adoption.

As for the kitty’s hero, Chris was so happy that their supposed-to-be-usual trail workout revealed the kind of pup Amaretto is.

“I’m happy that I have such a smart dog that knew something was different in the woods,” Chris said. “I’m proud of her and think she’s a hero.”
