Foster parents deliver dog’s babies in the car over winter storm

• Maggie was taken in by Hill County SPCA when she was homeless and pregnant.
• Maggie gave birth during the snow storm in Texas, under the care of her foster mom.
• Thankfully, the delivery inside the house and in the car was a success.

When Texas was swamped in snow, people instinctively had to protect one another to survive the crisis. People look after people — and animals, too — to care for and rescue.

Magnolia, aka Maggie, was one lucky dog when a foster family took her in, the time she was most vulnerable: her pregnancy.

She was found wandering in the streets, when Hill County SPCA, a nonprofit animal shelter, took her under their care.

Aubrey Morgan, Maggie’s foster mom, confessed she had no idea how to foster a pregnant dog. To prepare her for Maggie’s big day, she did a lot of research on how to deal with an expecting dog, and how to tend for her babies.

“I had read so many resources, watched so many whelping YouTube videos, and collected hundreds of dollars’ worth of whelping and emergency supplies to have on hand,” Aubrey said.

As days passed by, Aubrey knew Maggie will deliver soon, and even though she was excited, the current weather crisis in Texas made her anxious and worried.

Apart from the worsening cold, the power loss in their city added to their predicament.

“One thing I read was the importance of puppies staying warm after being born. If they aren’t warm, they can’t digest food and will start fading,” Aubrey said.

In the middle of the snowstorm and power outage, Maggie delivered her puppies.

Aubrey and her husband were quick to act, ensuring the safety of Maggie and her newborns.

“Our house was in the 50s and dropping (it was 1 degree outside that night),” Aubrey said. “We moved her into our guest bathroom where we had the shower steaming to try and warm the room and my husband was boiling water to put into bags to also try and keep the room warm.”

When their efforts of getting the dogs warm seemed futile, Aubrey decided to do something.

“After the 4^th puppy was born, we realized, despite our efforts, the puppies were still too cold,” Aubrey said. “That’s when my husband started preparing the car for Maggie and the puppies. Maggie had her last three puppies in the car. We first got them into the car around 2AM and stayed there for about 12 hours.”

But as the winter storm worsened, their house just became too cold. That’s when they decided to go to her parents’ house, a good 45-minute drive. They were able to stay there for a couple of days until it was safe to go back to their home.

Thankfully, Maggie and her seven pups made it safely. She now enjoys being a mom to Daisy, Poppy, Ash, Rosie, Dahlia, Clover and Aster!
