Harley-Davidson’s Historic Home Saved: A Legacy Preserved!

Quick Smiles:
- A historic home linked to Harley-Davidson’s origins has been preserved from demolition.
- The Davidson Legacy Preservation Group, with help from the Harley-Davidson community, led the restoration efforts.
- Harley-Davidson provided crucial funding to help secure the property’s future.
In a delightful twist of fate, the home of Harley-Davidson co-founder William C. Davidson has been saved from the wrecking ball, thanks to the unwavering dedication of motorcycle enthusiasts and the iconic company itself.
Situated in the picturesque Angus village of Scotland, the Davidson Cottage once housed William C. Davidson before he emigrated to America in 1857.
It was there that his children, alongside a young William Harley, would eventually lay the foundations for what would become a legendary motorcycle brand.
The cottage, left in a state of disrepair, was lovingly restored by passionate bikers who transformed it into a mid-nineteenth-century marvel.
However, when the property was put up for sale again, it faced the threat of being demolished by developers.
This sparked the formation of the Davidson Legacy Preservation Group, which successfully secured a matching grant from the UK Government’s Community Ownership Fund.
Yet, they still needed to gather over £300,000 to truly save the cottage.
After a determined three-year campaign, with numerous donations pouring in, Harley-Davidson stepped in at the eleventh hour to bridge the financial gap.
Nyree Aitken from the Davidson Legacy Preservation Group expressed her gratitude, stating, “This incredible milestone would not have been possible without the dedication and generosity of so many.”
She continued, “We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the fundraising efforts, especially the Harley-Davidson riding community and our supporters worldwide. Your enthusiasm and commitment has been truly inspiring.”
The UK Government’s contribution through the Community Ownership Fund was also acknowledged as pivotal in preserving this piece of history.
Aitken added, “The final funding, generously provided by Harley-Davidson, reinforces our shared commitment to honoring the Davidson heritage, and we are excited to collaborate with them as we move forward.”
With the purchase process underway, plans are already being laid for exciting developments in 2025.
“Together, we are keeping the Davidson legacy alive,” Aitken concluded.
The story of Harley-Davidson is one of innovation and collaboration. In 1901, William S. Harley, a 20-year-old mechanical engineer, designed a small engine for bicycles.
By 1903, with the help of Arthur and Walter Davidson, the first motor-bicycle was completed.
This humble beginning led to the establishment of their first factory in 1906, and by 1920, Harley-Davidson had become the largest motorcycle manufacturer globally.
The preservation of the Davidson Cottage is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Harley-Davidson community, ensuring that the legacy of its founders continues to inspire future generations.
