Local Hero’s Modest Wish Granted After Daring Rescue

Quick Smiles:
- Crane operator Glen Edwards heroically rescued a worker from a burning building.
- Despite his terminal cancer, Edwards received a series of home improvements as a gesture of gratitude.
- The charity Bucket List Wishes fulfilled his modest wish for new flooring and a garden shed.
In the bustling town of Reading, Glen Edwards became a local hero after his daring rescue of a construction worker from a fiery high-rise.
Defying thick smoke and gusty winds, Edwards expertly maneuvered his crane to position a basket close enough for the worker to escape the dangerous mix of flames and fumes.
This act of bravery has not only earned him the admiration of many but also a touching gesture of appreciation.
Recently, it was revealed that Edwards, now 66, has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Despite this, he continues to inspire with his humility and courage.
The charity Bucket List Wishes, moved by his story, reached out to him with an offer to fulfill a wish.
Gini Hackett, the founder of the charity, personally contacted Edwards.
“I found it amazing to do this wish for him,” she expressed. “He’s really humble, what he did was incredible. He is a real hero to us so we absolutely had to do something for him.”
Instead of opting for extravagant desires, Edwards requested something practical for his new home—a garden shed and new flooring.
Hackett and her team went above and beyond, providing not only the shed and flooring but also new kitchen appliances, a gift voucher for bedding, and a surprise fishing trip to Swanage.
Reflecting on the rescue, Edwards recounted the intensity of the moment.
“The smoke was absolutely intense, I could hardly see him, well, I couldn’t see him. I knew he was there, he was standing on the edge of the building,” he shared.
The rescued worker, grateful for his second chance at life, penned a moving letter to Edwards.
“He’s got two girls, eight and 13 they were at the time, and I got a very heartfelt letter that would bring a tear to your eye,” Edwards said.
This story of bravery and gratitude reminds us of the everyday heroes among us, whose actions and humility leave a lasting impact.
