A convenience store in Shropshire, England, became the scene of an unexpected showdown when Mairi Kerin, a 42-year-old martial arts expert, thwarted a robbery attempt.

While purchasing chocolate treats for her nieces, Mairi noticed a suspicious individual outside the store.

“As I got out of the car I noticed this person all covered up and thought ‘You look like you’re going to rob a shop’,” she recounted.

However, she quickly dismissed the thought, reminding herself not to jump to conclusions.

Inside the store, as she prepared to pay, the man made his move, placing something against the door.

“I heard the shopkeeper ask, ‘Why did you put something against the door?’, and I heard him reply, ‘Because I’m going to take your money’,” Mairi recalled.

Despite the man’s calm demeanor, Mairi’s instincts kicked in when she noticed his hand lingering in his pocket.

She took action, grabbing his arm and delivering a couple of decisive kicks to his shin, sending him fleeing.

Mairi, who resides in Staffordshire, was later honored with a Commendation Award by the Police Chief Superintendent of West Mercia Police for her courageous act.

Reflecting on the incident, she mentioned that her confidence stemmed from two decades of martial arts training.

“We would later find out a knife and a firearm were involved but whatever was in the left pocket, for that moment it was not coming out,” she said.

Interestingly, Mairi’s determined walk caught on CCTV was influenced by her new heels, which she was breaking in for a job.

“I was wearing new heels at the time and I was trying to break them in,” she explained.

Mairi attributes her actions not to bravery but to self-belief nurtured through years of training.

“The time was right, and I’m glad I was there. People have asked whether I was scared. No, I was not.”

Her actions received praise from Chief Superintendent Edd Williams, who described them as “an inspiring act of bravery from an upstanding member of the public.”

“Her quick thinking meant that no one was harmed during this attempted robbery and no money or goods were stolen,” he added.
