McKinney Leads the Way in Cardiac Survival

Quick Smiles:
- Cardiac survival rates in McKinney, Texas soar from 10% to 47% in two years.
- The launch of a Neighborhood Heroes campaign will place 200 AEDs in local communities.
- The city sets a new standard as one of America’s first “4-Minute Cities.”
McKinney, Texas has made remarkable strides in saving lives by strengthening the partnership between its fire and police departments and empowering local residents.
The city’s survival rate for cardiac arrest has jumped from 10 percent to an impressive 47 percent after adopting a coordinated response model inspired by Seattle.
With over 80 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) now in all police vehicles, emergency care can reach those in need faster than ever before.
McKinney’s latest initiative, the Neighborhood Heroes campaign, plans to deploy 200 more AEDs, enabling citizens to quickly help in emergencies and making every home a potential lifesaving location.
Fire Battalion Chief Ben Jones began this transformation by sending a team to Seattle’s Resuscitation Academy, bringing back a proven approach focused on rapid recognition, immediate CPR, and fast AED access.
Every minute is critical, and the city’s efforts have already saved nine residents within the past year.
Community leaders emphasize the importance of teamwork and friendly rivalry in creating a culture that values quick response and lifesaving action.
Some police officers who were initially uncertain quickly embraced the new approach after experiencing firsthand the impact of saving lives.
“It’s a really interesting shift in mindset for police officers, and they bought into it,” Fire Chief Paul Dow shared.
Jones reinforced the mission: “We want to have these AEDs everywhere in the community.”
The McKinney Fire Department’s “4-Minute City” concept has been chosen by the American Heart Association to headline its Heart Health Month campaign, recognizing the city’s outstanding leadership in improving cardiac survival for everyone.
