Keula Nidreia Pereira Semedo, a visually impaired runner who represented Cape Verde in the Tokyo Paralympics, already had a tight-knit bond with her guide, Manuel Antonio Vaz da Veiga. After all, they are connected by a small tether during races. Their bond soon turned into a lifelong one when she received a surprise proposal at the end of the 200-meter women’s race in the qualifying heat.

Semedo may have finished fourth on Wednesday’s race, but she received something far more priceless.

As the contestants gathered at the end of the race, the guides seemed to brief the other runners on what was about to happen.

Da Veiga briefly disappeared, only to return again with an engagement ring. He held Semedo’s right hand, got down on one knee, and proposed. And she said yes!

The pair shared a tight hug while everyone cheered them on.

Semedo is currently residing in Portugal but is representing her birth country, Cape Verde, during the Games. She started competing in 2005 after she was encouraged by a teacher.

Her Olympic profile lists da Veiga as the top influence on her career.

Olympics fans also witnessed a proposal in July during the Summer Games. Argentine fencer Maria Belen Perez Maurice accepted the proposal of her coach and boyfriend of 17 years, Lucas Saucedo, following a loss to Hungary’s Anna Marton.
