Pregnant mom dives into cold lake to save 3 drowning girls [Video]
- Alyssa Dewitt, a pregnant mom, went for a beach walk with her kids.
- Suddenly, she noticed three girls drowning.
- Wanting to help the kids, Alyssa plunged into the cold water and brought them back to safety.
One windy day, Alyssa Dewitt took her kids out. They went to have a quick walk at First Street Beach, located on Lake Michigan in Manistee, Michigan.
The remote part of the beach, with barely a crowd, was somehow a breath of fresh air for Alyssa, who is five-month pregnant. Suddenly, the mom spotted three girls and she knew something was wrong. They were struggling to keep their heads above the water for some air, but they kept getting pulled away from the shore.
“We had probably been there 20-30 minutes before the girls started struggling in the water and I noticed the arms waving towards me,” Alyssa told Tank’s Good News.
She called 911, but could barely hear the responder due to the strong wind and waves. Alyssa then screamed the location and said that kids were drowning.
The mom made sure that her kids were safe and her eldest child, 6, was looking after her sibling.
Thinking that the drowning girls would likely not make it if she waited for the responders, she immediately plunged in to the cold lake to save the girls!
“Every time I would get them partway up, a wave would smash them back down. This part will stick with me forever. This girl looked at me and said, ‘I’m going to die.’ It makes me cry every time I think about it,” she told WPBN. “I said, ‘I promise you. I am not going to let you die out here. I will get you out of this water.’”
If not for her quick response, the girls might have ended up in a more tragic situation.
“I knew if I didn’t do something, those girls weren’t going to make it,” Alyssa said. “Fight or flight is so different for everyone, but I’d hope if anyone found themselves in such a situation as mine where no help was around and access to 911 was limited, they’d fight with all they had!”
Somehow, Alyssa knew she was meant to be on that beach that day, exactly on that side of the lake, so she could save the children. She was even more grateful that her eldest was able to look after her brother.
“Whenever it’s brought up, I always tell her that I’m really proud of her for keeping her brother safe and off the pier while I was helping the kids. She did such a good job that day,” the proud mom shared.
Soon after, Alyssa had herself and her unborn baby checked out at a local hospital, and they were both fine.
The hero momma hopes that the story would encourage everyone, especially parents, to brief their kids about water safety.
“I don’t think kids realize how quickly the lake can suck you in. Before you know it, it’s too late,” she said.
