Astronomers at the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii have achieved a groundbreaking feat, capturing the highest-resolution images ever of a solar flare.

These unprecedented photos showcase intricate coronal loops within a flare four times the size of Earth, offering a stunning glimpse into the Sun like never before.

The incredibly fine coronal strands, averaging about 30 miles wide and reaching as slim as 13 miles, are the smallest ever documented, setting a new benchmark for solar observations.

The research may reshape our understanding of how the Sun’s magnetic fields operate and improve forecasting of space weather events on Earth.

“This is the first time the Inouye Solar Telescope has ever observed an X-class flare,” shares Cole Tamburri, the study’s lead author from the University of Colorado Boulder.

“These flares are among the most energetic events our star produces, and we were fortunate to catch this one under perfect observing conditions.”

Astronomers were able to observe the coronal loop strands with remarkable clarity as the flare faded, giving new insight into the fundamental structure of solar flares.

The discovery suggests these loops may be the elemental building blocks of flare architecture, and for the first time, individual loops may have been resolved in detail.

“It’s like going from seeing a forest to suddenly seeing every single tree,” Tamburri says, highlighting the leap in our visual understanding of the Sun.
