Cats tend to keep their distance from dogs at first

Cats have a tendency to display “aggressive or antagonizing behaviors” toward dogs since they are more likely to feel uncomfortable around them at first, Psychology Today noted.

Still, several studies have proven that the different species can happily coexist and even form friendships once they are given enough distance and time to get to know each other comfortably. According to the pet care blog Nylabone, a puppy and kitten raised together will eventually learn to “tolerate” each other, and even become real friends who “play and nap together.”

Nylabone made a few suggestions for the first introduction: “Make sure the cat is at the dog’s eye level. You should also keep a firm grip on both animals, which will provide them with a sense of security. If one of the animals seems either aggressive or frightened, immediately remove the cat and try again at a later time.”

It’s important not to force the situation and to avoid leaving them alone together if you’re still not sure how they would act.
