Quick Smiles:

  • A loving husband arranged daffodils for his wife after his passing.
  • His wife Marilyn and friends now plant bulbs annually in his memory.
  • Their efforts turned into a joyful community event, brightening the neighborhood.

When Marilyn Cudmore received a bouquet of daffodils on her birthday, it came six months after her husband Stephen had passed away. Before his death, Stephen ensured a future birthday surprise for Marilyn, bringing comfort and inspiration.

“Hello beautiful! Happy birthday, Steve”

This touching gesture motivated Marilyn to honor his memory by planting daffodil bulbs along her street in East Sooke, British Columbia. Friends from her book club soon joined in, and together they created an annual daffodil planting tradition, calling themselves the Spade Maids.

The cheerful team gathers each year, expanding the vibrant display along the neighborhood road. Their project has grown to bring beauty and happiness to all who pass by, and next year they hope to stretch the blossoms even farther.

“I’d love for people to be able to drive down East Sooke Road in March and April and just see the blooms,” Marilyn told Saanich News. “It’s turned from a memorial into something that brings joy to everyone.”

Each spring, Marilyn’s daffodil-lined street celebrates both her late husband’s memory and the spirit of community, as the flowers bring smiles to neighbors and travelers alike.
