Quick Smiles:

  • Two teens created an igloo to uplift their neighborhood after an ice storm.
  • The igloo became a welcoming space for families and friends to gather and share messages.
  • Neighbors felt hope and joy watching the community come together around the icy creation.

After an ice storm swept the mid-Atlantic, Adeline Sutich and Maeve Ritchotte decided to bring joy to their neighborhood by building an igloo where a house once stood. They carefully shaped ice bricks and used a sled to transport them, constructing their igloo on Helena Drive in Silver Spring, Maryland.

“We built an igloo to create unity in the community and bring people together,” Adeline shared during a call.

As snow made daily life challenging, the igloo became a bright spot for neighbors.

“It brought joy to all the neighbors when the snow was frustrating and very difficult to cope with.”

Her family joined in, with Adeline’s dad providing headlamps for evening work and her mom capturing the project in photos and videos. They added ice chairs, a table, and even a guest book for visitors.

“We even made a guest book for people to write in and their messages were so heartwarming,” said Adeline.

Messages included warm memories and community cheer. “I did this as a kid, too,” wrote Melinda.

Another visitor, Jen, shared, “My three kids love it!”

Adeline noticed more people stopping by and connecting with each other through the igloo.

“Many neighbors have come up and talked with us about the igloo and how much they’ve enjoyed it.”

She added, “We’ve had more visitors sign the book today!”

One neighbor who watched the project from her window reminisced, “It brought back so many childhood memories”.

This heartwarming effort shows how a little creativity can help people overcome challenges and build hope together. Stay tuned for more inspiring stories like this!
