Scientists have discovered that nanobodies, unique protein fragments found in camelids such as alpacas and llamas, might provide new treatments for neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.

These nanobodies are much smaller than conventional antibodies and have shown the ability to restore behaviors in mice models of brain disorders, all while reducing side effects.

“Camelid nanobodies open a new era of biologic therapies for brain disorders and revolutionize our thinking about therapeutics,” said Dr. Philippe Rondard of France’s Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique.

Experts highlight that nanobodies are easier to produce and engineer, potentially enabling safer and more effective therapies for conditions where traditional treatments often cause side effects.

While more tests are needed before human trials, researchers are optimistic about their long-term stability and safety for future use.

Dr. Pierre-André Lafon added, “These are highly soluble small proteins that can enter the brain passively.”

This breakthrough brings hope for safer, more targeted brain therapies and a brighter outlook for people affected by neurological disorders.
