  • Tiny Toby was almost euthanized by his former owners because of his special needs.
  • Fortunately, he was rescued and given a custom wheelchair to help with his mobility.
  • Toby, who can now move on his own, also got a new family in time for the holidays.

Meet Toby, a shih tzu and Yorkie mix puppy weighing just below 1.5 pounds (23 ounces). For the holiday season, he got the best gifts. He was saved from euthanization, given a custom wheelchair, and adopted into a loving family!

Toby was born with Hydrocephalus. The buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the hollow places inside his brain affected his vision, coordination, and mobility.

Because of his condition and struggles with mobility, his previous owners considered euthanization. Fortunately, he was rescued and taken in by the Florida Yorkie Rescue.

The rescue’s president and founder, Kit DeRoche, declared, “Every life is worth living. Just because he has some challenges, they are never too big for Florida Yorkie Rescue.”

The rescue updated their social media followers about Toby’s progress.

His story reached Walkin’ Pets, a pet mobility company based in New Hampshire. Their team members traveled to Palm Beach, Florida, to meet Toby so they can outfit him with a custom wheelchair.

Toby was able to adjust to the wheelchair quickly. It helped him build strength in his front legs, and now he can stand and walk on his own easily.

Kit also decided to adopt Toby, so he also got a home just in time for Christmas!

She hopes that Toby’s perseverance inspires and encourages others to take a chance on dogs with special needs.

Kit said, “You will never find a more grateful heart in a dog than one that you’ve rescued.”

Just look at Toby. With just a bit of love and support, he made huge strides in overcoming his struggles.
