Quick Smiles:

  • UK’s first geothermal power plant now operational in Cornwall.
  • Generates clean electricity for 10,000 homes around the clock.
  • Produces domestic lithium for green batteries.

The United Downs plant taps into super-hot underground water over 190°C, drilled from the UK’s deepest onshore well exceeding three miles.

This renewable energy source operates 24/7, powering homes via the national grid through Octopus Energy.

The project also extracts lithium carbonate, boasting one of the world’s highest concentrations, with capacity for 100 tons annually from 2026.

Dr. Ryan Law, CEO of Geothermal Engineering Ltd., said the opening of the power plant is a “huge advancement for geothermal power in the UK.”

“Geothermal energy and critical minerals extraction are naturally complementary as they share the same subsurface resource,” Dr. Law explained.

“Therefore, collocating power and mineral extraction plants maximizes investment in the wells, minimizes subsurface disruption, and accelerates the transition to secure domestic supply in both critical sectors.”

Greg Jackson, Founder of Octopus Energy, said “For the first time, we’re bringing deep geothermal power to British homes—a clean, constant energy source right beneath our feet.”
