Underground Roman Villa Opens Through Virtual Tours

Quick Smiles:
- The House of Griffins in Rome is open to the public for the first time via live virtual tours.
- This ancient patrician mansion is preserved incredibly well thanks to being buried centuries ago.
- Guided live video tours let visitors experience its stunning frescoes and mosaics from a nearby vestibule.
The House of Griffins, a magnificent Roman mansion adorned with white stucco griffins, was once home to an elite family on Palatine Hill. Long sealed off to preserve its delicate frescoes and mosaics, this treasure is now accessible to the public for the very first time—using real-time video technology.
Visitors can watch a live-streamed tour as a guide, equipped with a head-mounted smartphone, explores the eight beautifully decorated rooms uncovered by archaeologist Giacomo Boni in the 20th century. Only researchers had glimpsed the intricate green marble tiles and Pompeii-inspired artwork before now.
“The Colosseum Archaeological Park thus expands its cultural offerings, making accessible a previously invisible, yet well-known and documented, site,” said park director Simone Quilici.
This tech-driven initiative was designed to ease overcrowding at Rome’s most famous monuments while sharing the city’s remarkable history. Up to 12 guests at a time can join from a vestibule near the archaeological site, enjoying narration as if they were walking through history themselves.
If you’re seeking rare glimpses into ancient luxury, this virtual visit is sure to brighten your day with Roman wonders!
