A veteran couple received a life-changing surprise as thanks for their continued service to their country: their entire mortgage paid off in full!
The couple from Jacksonville, North Carolina, are already both retired, but they continue to serve their community and promote veterans’ rights.
Mario Perez served the U.S. Marine Corps for 13 years, during which he served two deployments in 24 different countries. His wife, Amy, is also a retired Marine, but she continues to serve as the community development director for “Remember Everyone Deployed,” an organization that supports the families of deployed service members.
The couple was among 11 military families chosen by Veterans United Home Loans to be given their dream home.
Good Morning America helped deliver the good news — along with their friends and family members, fellow veterans, and the local high school marching band!
The couple had been searching for housing for months, and had just closed on their new home the day before.
When they saw ABC News correspondent Rob Marciano, they were shocked to learn that they were live on national TV.
Rob told them, “We’ve heard so much about your story, how much you’ve given to the community, from your friends and your neighbors, and we just want to tell everyone about you.”
He then held up a copy of their new mortgage and tore it into pieces!
After the initial shock, the good news finally settled in. Amy and Mario were in tears of joy. They were now mortgage-free!
Mario shared, “The American Dream is something everyone strives for. And here we are with an opportunity to give not only back to the community, but also to give to our family as well.”
Amy added, “I mean, we’re still in shock. With our house paid for, I mean, it’s a dream come true, right?”
Amy and Mario showcased the Marine Corps values well after their retirement, exemplifying honor, courage, and commitment as they continued to serve however they can.
Congratulations to Amy and Mario! They truly deserve this wonderful gift.
