  • Fiona Grayson disliked arachnids, until she met a giant spider she named Cordelia.
  • Fiona gave her new neighbor a home makeover.
  • She made flower pots, a doormat, a grill, and a porch swing, and put them on Cordelia’s entryway — and they were all adorable!

Fiona Grayson used to hate arachnids, until she met Cordelia.

It was just in July when Fiona realized she had a neighbor. “I noticed our cat, Scout, staring intently at something in the gap between where the wall meets the decking on our side porch,” she told The Dodo. “Closer inspection revealed my first glimpse of the large spider who I’ve come to name Cordelia.”

Before Cordelia happened, Fiona’s impulsive reaction when meeting this kind of animal was “kill on sight.”

However, when Fiona noticed Cordelia’s eyes while she was trying to get a closer look, she realized that the giant spider — as big as her palm — seemed to be looking up at her.

“…I fancifully wondered if maybe she was observing me with the same level of curiosity as I was her,” the woman said.

Since then, Fiona’s opinion of arachnids has changed.

Fiona let her new neighbor feel that she was welcome, and she did that by sprucing up the spider’s entryway. She started with some flower pots with fennel blossoms to help attract some dinner for Cordelia.

“The flower pots were just strips of dampened grocery store bag that I wrapped around the lid of a nail polish bottle, painted and filled with dry flowers,” Fiona said. “They took almost no time.”

After putting the tiny cute pots, Fiona realized that a doormat would be a fun touch. So, she made one using a black cardstock and scribbled “welcome” on it.

Fiona wasn’t done with her little project yet. She added a “WEBer grill,” a rock she painted and put some nails on, and a porch swing built with twigs, twine and glue.

It was a fun project Fiona enjoyed, and also the reason why she grew fonder of Cordelia.

“It was simply fun and wholesome, and in the process, I became very fond of her and excited to see her when she’d reveal herself at night,” she said. “I tell her she’s beautiful and loved and thank her for her diligent pest control work. Any less would be just kinda rude and unneighborly.”

Cordelia loved the home makeover. She made her web even larger and more stable, reaching all the decorations — likely as a gesture that she was accepting them as part of her new home.

Fiona has shared her miniature project on interior designing on social media, and Cordelia started gaining fans. Even those who have arachnophobia are now loving the sweet giant spider!

She added that her spider friend had started coming out more often, and had even become “attached to all of the decorations and furnishings.” This made Fiona pleased, knowing that her new little buddy appreciated her gesture.

They surely had a way to understand each other. What a friendship!
