  • Khristine Lilly of Kyle, Texas had an idea to transform her house into a gingerbread house to brighten up Christmas during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The house has become a holiday attraction offering visitors a photo opportunity with Santa, free cup of hot chocolate and gingerbread cookies to buy for home.
  • It has also become a venue for Lilly to ask for donations for canned goods and cash to feed the local community’s hungry members.

What started out as a mom’s attempt to brighten up Christmas during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has turned into a yearly tradition.  It has also become a holiday attraction for others to have photos with Santa played by her husband and a free cup of hot chocolate.

Her husband may have had doubts at first but he now willingly and eagerly welcomes guests in his Santa suit and even hands out candies.

Khristine Lilly drew inspiration from the “best ever” gingerbread houses that her mom used to make and she and her siblings brought to school.

Lilly recalls, “We would just stare at the house and wait for the day we could eat it.”

She added that her mom’s gingerbread houses had the ability to make Christmas even more magical. And sharing the feeling with her community would bring light to the dark days of the pandemic.

Anyone can also bring home a piece of the magical gingerbread house as gingerbread cookies are for sale on the porch.  After all, Lilly made it from the original recipe from her mom.

The all-handmade gingerbread house even has become Lilly venue to ask the hundreds of visitors to donate canned food donations to help in fighting food insecurity in the local community. Others donate money. The Hays County Food Bank in San Marcos, Texas, receives all the donations.

Now Lilly is wondering whether she already had an idea that her house would be a gingerbread house the moment she chose the paint color.

Maybe it was written in the stars the way it turned out to be.
