Ted Midgely, a mechanic from Bradford, England, has embarked on an inspiring journey that showcases the power of perseverance and the joy of learning. At 58 years old, he has finally unlocked the world of reading, an achievement that allowed him to enjoy a magazine he purchased four decades ago.

Throughout his school years, Ted faced challenges due to undiagnosed dyslexia. Misunderstood as “lazy” by teachers, it wasn’t until middle school that his condition was recognized.

However, despite being transferred to a school for students with learning difficulties, Ted eventually left the education system to work in a textile mill.

Ted’s inability to read didn’t hinder his career as a mechanic for speedway motorcycles, a unique British motorsport involving dirt bikes on an oval track. His work took him across the globe, fueling his desire to read.

“I got involved with a young chap from Australia called Brayden Elliot and it’s gone really well and I want to become his manager—that’s what I’d like to do,” Ted shared.

“But to do that I need to read emails.”

With determination, Ted sought help from Duncan Livsey, a tutor with Read Easy Derby. He began taking two 30-minute lessons weekly.

“He’s been brilliant,” Duncan commented. “Because Ted’s so positive he’s been so easy to teach—it’s been so rewarding and I get a buzz each time I sit down with him.”

Beyond reading emails, Ted’s progress allowed him to read a cherished copy of Speedway Star magazine from 1985.

“I had this for so long and I’ve never been able to read it… it was amazing to do it,” he said.

Ted’s story is a testament to the idea that it’s never too late to learn and pursue new opportunities.
