Pit Bull Wanders Into Family’s Backyard Looking For A New Home

• Lakisha Smith found an abandoned pit bull outside her house.
• She fostered him and made efforts to see if someone would be looking for ‘Poppy’.
• His previous owner reached out and tried to pick Poppy up, but ended up deciding to let his second family keep him.

Lakisha Smith pulled up outside her house and stumbled upon an abandoned pit bull, malnourished in rough shape. He needed someone to help him out. He waited outside on the family’s backyard and trusted that he picked the right people.

Her daughter walked towards the poor animal and started petting him, which appeared something comforting for the poor animal. They called him Poppy.

 “I told her to feed him because he looked like he was starving,” she said. “He was thirsty and very dehydrated. When I came back from running errands, my husband Trey and our daughter Ja’Mya and I bathed him. He was infested with fleas, had thinning hair and was very dirty.” 

First, she prepared a place for the animal, wanting to ensure that she could make him as comfortable as possible. The next day, she headed over to the veterinarian’s clinic to check for an implanted microchip that could determine if someone is looking for him. She posted about the pit bull on social media, hoping that it would reach the animal’s previous owner. The search came up empty.

The household found the news comforting, especially because they wanted to keep him. However, just when the animal started to warm up to new people around him, his owner responded to their posts on social media about the animal’s owner. Everyone was crushed.

That day, when his owner arrived to pick him up, the animal appeared discontented his reaction was indescribable. Seeing this, he decided to let them keep him. 

“The guy walked away and said, ‘You have a good home now,’” Lakisha said. 

Poppy is already a member of the household, but this made it official. Besides, these people are those that stuck around through difficult situations. Over the years, the animal needed medical attention for complications from previous arrangements — abandoned alone. Poppy pulled through because he knew he had to make it back home to his family. 

“[The vet] said, ‘He has a will to live now … his new family,’” Lakisha said. 

Poppy picked the right people. He found people that want him, people that would take good care of him. They could not picture their lives without him. 

“We love our Poppy and he loves the Smiths,” Lakisha said. “He’s ours.”
