Parting ways with your pet, even for a short while, can feel like a small tragedy. Whether it’s a quick trip to the grocery store or a longer absence due to a vacation, the longing to have them by your side is often mutual.

Such is the case for a college student who experiences this pang of separation each time she leaves for campus, bidding farewell to her family and cherished cat who can’t accompany her. Despite the rest of the family being present, the cat misses her dearly.

In a recent TikTok video shared on the account @alyssawalter.s, the cat has found a clever way to communicate. She ascends to the top of the refrigerator, positions herself in front of the home security camera, and sits back on her hind legs. Then, her front paws begin to wave up and down, sending a virtual greeting through the camera.

The caption on the video reads: “When you’re away at college but your cat knows you can drop in on the cameras.”

The student’s mother sent her the video of the cat’s attempt to wave at her, which prompted an immediate response. She quickly accessed the camera’s app to see her cat, but by the time she connected, the cat had moved on, as she explained in the comments.

Though it’s a bittersweet moment, the student now knows her cat is thinking of her. Thanks to the camera, she can reciprocate the greeting, allowing her cat to hear her voice. Yet, the knowledge that her pet is missing her can be a tearful realization. Such is the emotional toll of checking on pets through a security camera.
