Dedicated Crossing Guard’s Quick Thinking Protects Family in Heartwarming School-Zone Moment

Richard Jones takes his job as a school crossing guard in Las Vegas very seriously. He understands that making sure that children and their parents make it to and from school is his first priority. During a recent morning rush, Richard took matters into his own hands when a speeding car nearly caused a tragedy at school.

Kae’la Leon Guerrero told Fox 5 she was walking through the intersection with her two children the morning Richard saved their lives.

“If that cross guard didn’t jump in front of that car, something bad would have definitely happened,” the grateful mother said.

Jake Garcia shared his dash cam video from outside Pinecrest Academy St. Rose with Kae’la Leon Guerrero, who then played it for Richard Jones. She offered Richard a high-five and a huge debt of gratitude.

“I don’t know how many times I said thank you for what happened yesterday, but he’s an amazing man. And my kids thank him every day actually,” she said.

The car was reportedly traveling 35 miles per hour in a school zone. Video shows Richard very calmly walking into the middle of the intersection and putting up his stop sign. Thankfully for everyone involved, the driver slowed down.

“And from a distance, we saw a car coming, but not knowing that he was speeding towards us,” Kae’la recalled. She added that Richard shielded her and her kids. As word began to travel around the school community about Richard’s morning, people began to tell him that he was a hero.

He very humbly told Fox 5 that he was just doing what he promised to do when he took the job.

“Honestly, I just try to do the job the best way I can,” Richard Jones said.
