Freediver Yuki Nakano has been enjoying her underwater adventures in Hawaii. Capturing photos of the beautiful underwater scenery, she usually keeps her distance from the peaceful animals residing beneath. One day back in February, a friendly porcupine fish got up close to her and even offered her a toothy smile.

Nakano was at a popular snorkeling spot in Oahu when she first encountered the friendly fish.

The fish was easily recognizable because of his seemingly recent injury to his right eye. He had trouble swimming straight, but didn’t appear bothered by Nakano’s presence.

Nakano wondered why he was staying in the same spot when similar fish would usually run away.

Nakano decided to visit the same spot every day, and the injured fish was always there.

He may have impaired vision, but the fish always recognized Nakano. And he always greeted her with that cute toothy smile!

After meeting the porcupine fish regularly for days, the little one suddenly disappeared one day in March.

Nakano was concerned that something might have happened, but she believed in her heart that she would see him again. And so she waited.

Three months passed before Nakano was reunited with the friendly fish, at the very same spot where they first met.

Nakano shared, “His eye wounds got a lot better and he started smiling. I was happy that he came back and I muttered with my heart, ‘Welcome back! I’ve been waiting for you.’”

Nakano has shared several photos and videos of the smiling fish on social media, that he earned so many fans! People have been enamored by his sweet toothy grin.

“He makes everyone happy. I like to think he is now the most famous Hawaiian fish,” Nakano shared.
