  • This year marks the upcoming 50th anniversary of Lover’s heartfelt Valentine tradition.

In the charming village of Lover, England, Valentine’s Day isn’t just a date on the calendar—it’s a beloved community celebration. Every February, visitors travel from near and far to send romantic cards stamped with Lover’s unique postmark, bringing smiles to recipients across the globe.

Decorations of red and pink hearts brighten homes and businesses, reflecting the joyful spirit of the village. Dedicated volunteers have helped send over 10,000 love letters, with proceeds from cards and souvenirs funding local improvements like the community center renovation.

“We are trying to promote Valentine’s day as a way of sending a little love to everyone,” said Nick Gibbs, a member of the Lover Community Trust.

Another volunteer, Debbie Harper, shared, “But, I bought a card for my husband and I got to put the stamp on. I love playing post office!”

Janet and Bob Halliday join in the festivities each year, helping add more touches to this close-knit, welcoming community. Plans for the 50th anniversary include a special tapestry inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer, tracing Valentine’s Day’s fascinating history.

You don’t need to visit in person to take part—cards can be ordered online and sent to loved ones anywhere in the world. For those curious, the village name rhymes with ‘Dover’!
