  • Benjamín spotted his cat Simon hanging out with a mouse instead of catching it.
  • While he initially urged Simon to kill the mouse, his cat’s compassion affected him so he let the mouse be.
  • He even named the mouse Chefcito and thought about adopting him if he decides to return.

Simon is a sweet cat who sees all other animals as friends, even when we humans would call them “pests.” Instead of chasing or hunting them, he would treat them as guests. One day, his human even caught him befriending a mouse!

Benjamín Sagredo, Simon’s dad, started hearing strange, faint noises from the kitchen.

Simon also kept playing with something, but Benjamín thought nothing of it since it only happened occasionally.

One day, Benjamín found out where the noises have been coming from.

He spotted his cat drinking from his water bowl — while a mouse was chilling beside him!

It turned out that Simon had befriended the mouse, instead of catching it like he was born to do.

Benjamín shared, “They looked closely acquainted. Simon was being affectionate. I decided to record it. I thought no one would believe me.”

Benjamín was naturally shocked. At first, he urged Simon to kill the mouse. “You have to kill it,” he says in Spanish.

But he observed Simon’s friendliness and gentle actions toward the mouse.

“I felt for the little mouse,” Benjamín said. “I couldn’t dream of hurting him. I named him Chefcito.”

He couldn’t help but be affected by his cat’s compassion.

Benjamín decided to just gently move Chefcito outside in case he wanted to escape.

But the little one had already felt safe and welcome in their home, and has been back many times.

“We love that Simon accepts him. He’s a very affectionate and sociable cat,” Benjamín shared. “If Chefcito keeps coming, we’re going to have to adopt him.”
