What started as a laid-back day at Venice Beach turned into an unforgettable rescue thanks to Sarasota County lifeguard Landon Lacy.

While relaxing off the clock on May 30, Landon noticed someone hurriedly heading toward the ocean with flotation devices. Almost at the same time, a notification flashed on his phone—there was a water rescue in progress. Without a second thought, Landon’s lifeguard instincts kicked in and he leapt into action.

He swam out an impressive 150 yards from shore, quickly reaching two swimmers caught in a dangerous rip current. The first person he reached was a distressed woman. She was safe, but fear for her husband outweighed her relief.

“She was frantic, saying, ‘My husband’s dying,’” Landon remembered.

Not hesitating for a moment, he swam even farther—up to 300 yards out—until he found her husband still struggling to keep afloat. Using his expertise, Landon coached the man onto his back and then guided him safely to shore. Both swimmers were then checked by Venice Fire Rescue, grateful for Landon’s fast response.

This uplifting rescue, captured in dramatic aerial footage by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit, highlights how one person’s courage and training can make a life-saving difference.

Everyday heroes like Landon Lacy truly show the spirit of community. His quick thinking and genuine compassion turned a frightening situation into a story of hope and gratitude on Venice Beach.
