Scientists Monitor New Mutated Flu Strain
Quick Smiles:
- New H3N2 subclade K flu strain has caught global attention for its rapid spread.
- Experts are closely tracking its presence and impact for the 2024-2025 flu season.
- Continued focus on science and public health helps inform and protect communities.
Researchers have identified a mutated strain of influenza A H3N2, called subclade K, which has quickly become dominant in several Northern hemisphere countries.
This new version has several mutations that may allow it to partially evade immunity from current vaccines, prompting experts to track its potential effects this flu season.
After causing early and severe flu seasons in countries like Japan and the United Kingdom, the strain has also been found in North America.
“Knowing that there’s a new mutated strain out there and H3N2 generally causes more severe disease is concerning,” said Dr. Robert Hopkins Jr.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that U.S. flu season usually peaks between December and February and continues into May, so experts will keep monitoring new developments.
Experts urge everyone to stay informed, follow updated health guidelines, and look out for symptoms as the situation evolves.
