Quick Smiles:

  • World’s smallest snake found again after two decades in Barbados.
  • Barbados threadsnake measures only 3 to 4 inches long.
  • Discovery highlights importance of conserving forest habitats.

The tiny Barbados threadsnake, the smallest snake on Earth, was rediscovered under a rock during a March ecological survey in central Barbados.

Previously unspotted for nearly 20 years, this species is so rare that confirmed sightings are separated by decades.

“Barbados threadsnakes are blind snakes, so they’re very cryptic,” said Connor Blades, a project officer with the Barbados Ministry of the Environment and Beautification.

Even experts have trouble distinguishing the threadsnake from the similar flowerpot snake, requiring careful examination under a microscope.

Justin Springer from Re:wild joined the search, using instinct and persistence to continue turning over rocks until the small snake was found.

“When you are so accustomed to looking for things and you don’t see them, you are shocked when you actually find it,” said Springer.

After its identification was confirmed, the snake—with its pale orange lines and unique features—was returned to its forest home.

The rediscovery underlines the vital role of Barbados’s remaining forests, which are crucial for the island’s unique biodiversity.

“If the threadsnake population isn’t very dense, I’m worried about their ability to find mates—particularly if their habitat is under threat and being degraded,” said Blades.

Springer added, “The threadsnake’s rediscovery is also a call to all of us as Barbadians that forests in Barbados are very special and need protection. Not just for the threadsnake, but for other species as well. For plants, animals and our heritage.”

Joyful news like this reminds us that nature can surprise us when we least expect it—so share these smiles with someone who could use a lift today!
