Being greeted by your dog at home is a wonderful experience for any pet owner. However, for those with deaf dogs, the roles might have to be reversed slightly.
Take, for instance, a deaf pup named Tommie residing in the Netherlands, who now relies on his owner to initiate the post-work greeting.
A heartwarming video shared on TikTok by user f.r.t.15, or Francisca, welcomes viewers to the happy reunion between her and Tommie, who is unaware of her arrival until she lovingly showers him with affection.
“For the past six months, Tommie doesn’t hear me come in anymore, so I greet him instead of the other way round,” Francisca reveals.
The 13-year-old dog is a member of the well-known Dutch breed Kooikerhondje. Francisca shares that Tommie, despite being fit, has started showing signs of aging over the past six months and is nearly entirely deaf. She’s had to adapt by using more sign language with him.
She also mentioned that her default method of waking Tommie wasn’t the most gentle, leading her to adopt a softer approach. She said, “In this video, I wake him up, perhaps not in the most gentle way. The people commenting on the video often give me helpful tips, so I made a new video where I gently blow in his face to wake him up more peacefully.”
The Walkerville Vet clinic identifies three common causes of deafness in pets: congenital deafness, severe and prolonged ear infections, and simple aging.
On their website, they observe, “Certain medicines can also cause deafness but that’s rare,” and they add a hopeful note, “If we’re fortunate we’ll all live with a deaf pet one day. All it takes is for them to live long enough.”
Francisca’s post quickly became a favorite on TikTok, attracting viewers from all over. The love for Tommie was immense, with viewers sharing their own deaf pet experiences and offering advice.
One user suggested, “I’ve heard that gently blowing on them is a good way to prevent them being startled.” Another shared a personal experience, “I had a Jack Russell who was born deaf, id come in the her nose would twitch and then she would realise I was home.”
Francisca’s heartwarming video is a lovely reminder that aging pets, despite losing some abilities, never lose their capacity to give and receive love. In the end, we should all be as fortunate as Francisca and Tommie, sharing such wonderful and unforgettable moments together.
