Football Legend Joins Fight Against The Novel Coronavirus Pandemic As A Healthcare Worker

• Football legend Laurent Duvernay-Tardif was celebrating his big win with his girlfriend in the Carribean.
• But they had to cut short their trip due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Being a medical graduate himself, he decided to help and serve the country as a health care frontliner.

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif from Canada was hailed as a football legend after he and the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years, three months ago.

The 29-year-old sports star is also a medical graduate and was the first in the field to play in the NFL. Now, he is making use of his education to join the battle against the novel coronavirus pandemic!

Laurent and his girlfriend, Florence, cut short their celebration in the Caribbean trip after realizing how serious the threats of COVID-19 were and returned immediately to Montreal in March.

After his 14 days of self isolation, Laurent wanted to join the fight with the medical frontliners. Even without a license to practice, he was determined to help!

Eventually, he received the approval to serve and he was given a role related to nursing. He underwent a crash course on PPE and contagion control and is now serving in a care facility near Montreal where he learned how tiring and rewarding it is to be a health worker.

“There’s so much that needs to happen just to visit with every patient — masks donned and hands washed and equipment like gloves and visors tugged on and off and thrown away,” he told Sports Illustrated in a letter. “Honestly, I was drained after — and looking forward to going back.”

At the same time, he is helping the NFL Players Association task force determine what safety measures can be done to protect the player and when they can get back to the field again. 

He has put his focus on saving lives, reminding people to cooperate in protecting themselves and their neighbors. 

“More than ever, we need to work as a team and help where the help is needed,” he said. “I have accepted this challenge with a lot of pride and humility. I am committed to helping to the best of my ability.”

Now that’s a true legend!
