Emergency situations also terrify responding officers, but they keep their heart and mind focused to get the job done.

And this is exactly like the heroic story of Officer Cody Hubbard.

Cody, 23, is the newest member of the Pottsville, Arkansas Police Department. Although he’s definitely considered a “rookie,” Cody proves that he’s more than capable and very much willing to come to someone’s rescue.

Recently, the newbie officer received a 911 call from a few miles away. It was from the Chronister family who called for help as their three-week-old son, Grady, turned “purple” and stopped breathing.

Parents Joe and Katelin were just administering some drops to ease the baby’s stomach, when the little boy started to choke on them.

“We were trying to give Grady his medicine … and he was taking them just fine,” Joe explained. “Right towards the end, he started choking.”

The 23-year-old officer rushed to the Chronister’s home upon getting the call. Like the rest of the family, Cody was “freaking out” while driving, praying the whole way there that he would be able to help Grady.

And his prayer was answered.

He marched up to the porch as soon as he arrived, gave the infant several hard smacks on the back, and was overwhelmed when the baby began to sputter as the drops were dislodged.

Cody was thinking of his own daughter in that entire experience. “Whenever I rolled up on this call, anytime I deal with something that involves a child, I think about how the parents would want me to treat the child as if it was mine,” he said.

When things were settled and Cody went back to his patrol car, he turned off his bodycam and broke down.

“I started just kind of bawling because, you know, it felt good to see how that turned out,” he explained. “Mentally, I just broke down. I was crying, but it was happy tears.”

Grady was checked out by a doctor and is expected to be totally fine. Although he wouldn’t remember Cody, his parents will forever be grateful to the little boy’s hero.
