  • The police officer who was first on the scene was about to bravely jump into the freezing water when firefighters with protective gear arrived.
  • They quickly took the pup to safety and brought him into the warmth of the fire engine.

A golden retriever was saved by firefighters and police officers after it fell into an icy pond and couldn’t get out.

The incident occurred earlier this week at Veterans Park, Avon, Ohio.

The pup was walking over the frozen pond and wandered several feet from the shoreline when the thin ice caved in. As the desperate dog struggled to get out of the icy water and onto the frozen part of the pond, the surrounding ice started to break as well.

The police officer who was first to respond to the scene started to remove his shoes and socks to bravely jump in and rescue the dog, local news reported.

Thankfully, firefighters who had protective water gear arrived before the officer jumped into the icy water. The firefighters quickly got the dog out of the freezing pond.

The pup was then wrapped with a blanket before being taken to the warm fire engine’s cab.

The parents of the pup, who were at the scene the entire time, were surely relieved that their pup safely made it home with them.

We’re so grateful for the first responders who rescued the poor pup!

Freezing waters and thin ice make the cold weather even more dangerous for dogs, so make sure to check out the Daily Paws guide if you’re planning to take your pup outside.

Make sure there are ways to keep your pup warm and consider using a harness to keep them at safe distance from you, especially around bodies of water.
