The Boss Cross cross-country team at George Steinbrenner High School in Lutz, Florida is not only winning championships but also winning the hearts of shelter dogs. For the past six years, the team has teamed up with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay to help promote animal adoption.

With the motto “Gentleman. Scholar. Athlete.”, the team has taken on the responsibility of caring for adoptable dogs by running with them daily during the summer and some fall and winter breaks. And it seems that their efforts are paying off as some of the dogs have found forever homes with team members or their families.

“It gives the dogs a fun experience outside of the shelter,” said Glen Hatchell, behavior and enrichment manager at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. And Head Coach Allison Szponar shared that the partnership has not only helped the dogs but has also impacted the team’s success.

“I truly believe that these kids having this responsibility and having to care for others directly impacts our team and our success,” she said. The team’s efforts have also raised awareness in the community about the importance of animal adoption.
