  • Jayme had wanted to get another dog but her boyfriend was reluctant.
  • So when he requested her to pick up a pup one morning, it was a huge deal.
  • The dog she later named Rufus was an abandoned pup that Aaron saw on a gas station.

Two weeks ago, Jayme Harley received a text message from her boyfriend. It was a photo of a dog looking sad and abandoned at a gas station. It came along with a short assertive command, “Go get him!”

She was still feeling a little fuzzy but she suddenly realized this was extremely important! Her boyfriend, Aaron Peters, had always been reluctant about her wanting to get another dog, so for him to request her to pick up the pup, that’s meant a huge deal!

“When it registered with me that it wasn’t a dream, I knew that it was a serious thing, that he really wanted me to go get him,” Jayme told The Dodo.

Aaron is a FedEx delivery driver and he was on his usual route when he spotted the pit bull at a gas station in Kinta, Oklahoma, one morning. The dog looked sad and Aaron was moved by his kind bright blue eyes.

“He looked like he needed a family,” he said. “I figured we could give him somewhere good to live.”

Jayme rushed to the  gas station and immediately offered the dog some water to drink. Shortly after she learned he had no owner and nobody bothered to care for him.

“A girl pulled up, and she told me that she’d seen him jump out of a car,” Jayme said. “And no one would take him in because he was a pit bull. That broke my heart because it should not matter what breed he is. All he wanted was somebody to love him.”

So she took the pup and put him in her car and almost instantly, he was fast asleep and snoring in delight.

“It made me feel like that was the perfect moment,” Jayme said. “I felt like he knew that he was going to have a place to sleep that night. He was going to have food. And he finally had the help that he needed.”

She took him straight to a veterinarian and aside from some skin issues, the pup, who was named Rufus later, was generally healthy.

Best part, he fit right in with her other dog and they became instant best buddies. He also got along nicely with her cat and the rest of her family, especially her boyfriend. He certainly made himself at home!

“Bringing him in has added this warmth to our home. He has added so much more laughter,” Jayme said. “He was the final piece to our family that we needed. He was the final piece we didn’t even know we needed.”
