Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip, two octogenarian friends, recently accomplished a lifelong dream of traveling to all seven continents of the world in 80 days.

The idea came from Hazelip, who suggested the adventure to Hamby, saying “Ellie, why don’t we consider traveling around the world in 80 days when we’re 80?” Despite some doubts, the friends spent years preparing and finally set off on their journey in January.

Their itinerary included stops in Lapland to see the northern lights and take a sleigh ride, Zanzibar, Egypt, India, Nepal, Bali, Japan, Rome, and London. Along the way, they documented their travels on social media, including TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, and quickly gained a following.

Thousands of people stopped scrolling to watch the friends tango in Argentina, ride camels through Egypt, and explore the North Pole via a husky-drawn sleigh.

“People would ask us, ‘Do you have TikTok?’ Well, no. Maybe we should get this going,” said Hamby. The friends also received recognition from strangers who recognized them as the “TikTok traveling grannies.”

Despite their newfound fame, the friends remained humble, saying they were excited to have brought joy to people following their adventure. They hope to inspire future generations to realize that it’s never too late to travel and explore the world.
