  • Sixty-five-year-old Kevin Hyde and his friend Joe DiTommasso, along with Joe’s poodle Minnie, set sail on a trip to Florida aboard Kevin’s sailboat, the Atrevida II.
  • During their journey, they encountered a massive storm at sea, lost their mast, and were adrift for days with no means of communication or supplies.
  • Just when all seemed lost, they were rescued by the crew of the Silver Muna, a cargo ship traveling from Amsterdam to New York City, who spotted their tiny sailboat about 200 miles off the coast of Delaware and brought them aboard after a challenging rescue operation.

The open sea is a vast and unpredictable place, where sailors often face challenges beyond their control. For Kevin Hyde and Joe DiTommasso, a sailing trip from North Carolina to Florida aboard the Atrevida II turned into a harrowing ordeal when they encountered a massive storm that left them adrift for days with a broken mast, no means of communication, and dwindling supplies.

“I’ve never heard winds so bad my whole life!” Joe recalled. “Sounded like the devil was out there.” As the situation grew dire, Kevin and Joe’s families reported them missing to the Coast Guard, and a search and rescue mission was launched. However, with no way to control their vessel and unsure of their location, Kevin and Joe prayed for rescue.

By the tenth day at sea, they were nearly out of water and feeling desperate. “We didn’t have no more water left, nothing,” said Joe. “We were sucking water out of the waterlines. She just kept me alive, all I asked the Lord was to see my granddaughter.” Just when it seemed all hope was lost, help arrived from an unexpected source.

A massive international cargo ship called the Silver Muna, en route from Amsterdam to New York City, spotted the tiny sailboat about 200 miles off the coast of Delaware. Captain Neeraj Chaudhary and his crew immediately stopped the ship and worked tirelessly for three hours to rescue Kevin, Joe, and Joe’s poodle, Minnie, using a cargo net.

Rescuing the men was an emotional experience for Captain Chaudhary and his crew. “God sent me to save them,” Captain Chaudhary said. “God sent our Silver Muna to save them.” Their selfless act of kindness and compassion exemplifies the best of humanity, as they went above and beyond their duty to help fellow mariners in need.

The heartwarming reunion of Kevin and Joe with their families was a moment of pure joy and gratitude. Their rescue serves as a testament to the power of resilience, hope, and the kindness of strangers. Despite the challenges they faced, Kevin and Joe’s story has a happy ending, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, miracles can happen.
