  • Aisha Nieves was checking a shelter’s page online, looking for a new pet for her sons.
  • Suddenly, she saw a familiar face, that of his pup which went missing two years ago after escaping after a car crashed into their fence.
  • Aisha did not waste a second, and the two got reunited — and it was the sweetest thing!

Sweet moments are the sweetest when they are least expected.

Take the case of Aisha Nieves. She was just browsing Lehigh County Humane Society’s (LCHS) adoptable pets page, looking for a new pet for her two sons, when she suddenly got the shock of her life. A familiar face greeted her, no other than her pit-bull-Rottweiler mix, Kovu, which she lost two years ago!

Aisha couldn’t believe her eyes at first, but later on verified that it was indeed her Kovu.

“I thought, ‘Wait, that can’t be him,’” the mom of two told The Morning Call. “Then, I saw the little scar over one eye, the scar from when he got caught in a gate, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s my baby, that’s Kovu!’”

Aisha then immediately called the shelter, verifying she was Kovu’s original owner and telling them she wanted to be reunited with the pup.

Kovu was originally adopted from the LCHS when he was only seven weeks old. Since then, Aisha and the pup had been inseparable, until he went missing in May 2019.

Kovu escaped when a car crashed into the fence of Aisha’s home. After a few weeks, he was found by LCHS who treated him and prepared him for adoption.

“He needed to be treated for fleas, was missing hair on his hind end, and had inflammation,” said LCHS director of development Deirdre Snyder. “He was treated with antibiotics and bathed with a special medical shampoo. He was in our shelter for about four months and then adopted out to a family Oct. 25, 2019.”

Recently, though, Kovu was returned to the shelter as his adoptive family was experiencing eviction, which has actually turned in favor of his mom, Aisha.

Aisha and Kovu’s reunion was an emotional moment. It was like they were never really apart because the connection is still blazing. At the same time, it felt like two years was way too long that ‘they miss each other’ looked like an understatement.

“He was screaming, trying to get away from the guy holding him and run to me,” the fur mom explained.

She added, “He just jumped on me, and we started kissing and hugging. He sat on my lap. I told him, ‘Yeah, buddy, you’re going home. I’m so sorry this happened. Never again am I losing you.’”
