  • Golden retriever Chickie chews up groom’s passport

A South Boston couple’s destination wedding in Italy was put at risk when their pet golden retriever, Chickie, chewed up the groom’s passport. Donato Frattaroli found himself in a pickle when he discovered that Chickie had munched on several pages of his passport, just days before his wedding ceremony.

Frattaroli and his fiancée, Magda Mazri, had just returned home from city hall after collecting their marriage license when they discovered the mischievous dog’s actions.

“I’m just a little stressed,” Frattaroli admitted to WCVB. But he remained hopeful, saying, “Keep my fingers crossed and, hopefully, everything will work itself out.”

Thankfully, Congressman Stephen Lynch’s office and Senator Ed Markey’s office were quick to respond. They’ve been in touch with the State Department to help expedite the process of getting a new passport for Frattaroli. The couple is scheduled to fly out to Italy for their wedding on Friday.

The 18-month-old pooch had chewed up the first four pages of Frattaroli’s passport, including a stamp from Mexico, where the couple got engaged.

“It was like every important page,” Mazri told NBC Boston. “Like all of his personal information — completely torn up, his picture page was torn up, the barcode on the back of the passport was torn up.”

Despite the unfortunate incident, Mazri insisted that Chickie is a “very good dog” and not a “house destroyer.” Frattaroli added that it ultimately comes down to the State Department and the passport office to help him get a replacement before their wedding.

On Monday, it seemed like the Boston Passport Agency had come through for the couple. Frattaroli told the Boston Herald that he was traveling to an appointment to pick up a new passport.

Mazri remained determined, saying, “I’m not allowing myself to even think of Plan B. There’s no other option for me. We are going to Italy on Friday one way or the other.”
